Nails DO NOT Breathe

Hey, ladies! ... And gentlemen (are there any?)
Let's clear something - nails do not breathe! Right? Nails are made of keratin and are dead (just like hair). That's why it doesn't hurt you, when you cut them. I think my nails are yellow because of all polishing, but letting them ''breathe'' wouldn't help. Only if I kept them unpolished for so long, that all my yellow part would grow out and I would cut it off. So that's that. :) What do you think about nail breathing?

Augusta wanted to see Ruby Pumps matte. So here it is: China Glaze Ruby Pumps over black nail polish + Essie Matte About You

I adore it matte! How about you?

Thanks for looking!

  1. I prefer it glossy, it has nothing to do with that particular combo though, I'm just too "old school" to be head over heels with the matte trend. For me pretty nails are glossy nails *hides away in shame*

  2. I like both versions a lot. Ruby Pumps looks amazing on top of black polish, I thought I'd hate the combo because I really don't like Lubu Heels which kinda has the same thing going on with black and red but this one looks really nice

  3. Well, that's your taste. You have nothing to be ''ashamed'' of. :) Thanks for your comment! :)

  4. That's exactly what I thought at first. And then I saw pictures of RP over black and comapred them to Lubu Heels. Oh man, what a difference. :)

  5. I really love it matte! I think it makes more unusual and unique!

About the whole, nails breathing thing...that made me laugh so hard. I used to have customers come in and always talk about letting their nails "breathe". Uh, you know its dead, right? The reason they are yellow is because its stained, just like a shirt. Does letting your shirt "breathe" make the stains go away? Nope. The only part of your nail that is alive is the bottom cuticle part where your matrix lives. Thats what makes your nails grow and if you are sick, that is where they start getting all crappy. The top and middle of your nails don't say a damn thing, because they are DEAD. Lol.

Had to add that in. *end rant*

  7. My mom always says: "You always wear polish, let your nails breathe!" I used to believe that, but when I wear no polish, the yellowing doesn't go away, either! =D Years ago, I had no idea about base- and top coats, and my nails were a lot yellower and looked nastier after wearing polish two weeks in a row. I've always had nail polish on my nails for almost 6 months now, and they just have a yellowish tint like yours, and I think it's normal. =) Plus, when I don't have nail polish on, my nails become weaker and bend easier!
By the way, ruby pumps looks gorgeous both ways =) Wear it by itself once, it's so gorgeous!

  8. this is very pretty matte as well as shiny. I almost like it better matte because it gives it really cool depth. Also, I agree with you on the staining. Nails do not breathe, and if you leave them unpolished they are more likely to get damaged. Polish helps lock out excessive moisture and things that can ruin nails. My nails stain, and on the rare times I wanna wear a soft sheer color, I just bleach them with lemon juice and baking soda and it lightens them enough usually.

If nail did breath mine suffocated over 25 years ago, yes that is how long it has been since I have gone more than an hour without polish on. So I think I'm proof enough that not wearing polish does not improve your nails at all. I have no overlay or wrap, my nail are 100% natural. My nails are stained but they were stained 20 years ago when I wore nothing but clear polish for 2 years due to work so it is caused by chemicalsin polish.

I think Ruby pumps looks fabulous matte and glossy!

  14. That's what happens to my nails when I don't wear any polish - they bend and break. I'll try RP on it's own too, I just needed to try it out over black first. :)

  15. You reminded me! I have to try lemon juice one more time. :) Thanks!

  20. Allowing nails to breathe will not help. Like everyone has said, the polish makes them stronger (especially China Glaze ones which have the strengthener in them). I had the same problem with my nails going yellow. What I did was take a nail file, and lightly filed away the top layer of my nails (Yes, this is not healthy for them, but it works). The yellow layer came off. It made my nails unhealthy and sore but I got to start again, used nail strentheners and cut and filed them regularly and they ended up getting better a lot quicker than waiting for the yellow to 'grow out'.

  23. Only two reasons for yellow nails is the polish remover or the base.. cant see anything else.. or wait.. well maybe the polish it self :/ idk... some scientist should research this stuff! :P

  25. Thank you! Nails do not breathe. Do you put them to your ears to hear them? Weird. I always laugh when I hear or read all the claims about feeding your hair. Buying all of the very expensive shampoos and conditioners is a waste to me. The only way your hair will improve is by having a good diet and keeping your hair trimmed. Not drying it out with too much heat. If your hair and nails were alive they would scream when they were cut! Love both versions of the Ruby Pumps.
