Cats and Beauty

I got this message/question on formspring by Valerie:
''
Sasha, I love nail polish and I love cats, but I DON'T LOVE this: CLICK Are they mad ???''

Well, Valerie, honestly...I don't know. For me, personally, this is just the reflection of human's vanity and it kind of reminds me of those little girls on beauty pageants (Toddlers & Tiaras).
Shortly: I think it is inappropriate and unnecessary.

People are trying to ''humanize'' animals and I, personally, don't like it. I'm not talking about sweaters for chihuahuas, I'm talking about dressing up dogs for owner's benefit (vanity?).
Nail polish on dogs is still more acceptable than on cats, 'cause they don't have them ''hidden''...but that's just my opinion.

I know I would never do this to my cats or dogs. I love them to much and I let them be what they are - animals. Sure, I do talk to them, love them like they were people, but it stops there. I could have the ugliest cat/dog in the world and it would still be the most gorgeous creature to me. Isn't that what love is supposed to be?

Don't even get me started on the cat wigs... *rolls eyes*

What's your opinion on this matter?

EDIT: I didn't knew about the nail caps...but still, I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about nail polish. The link is just a part of the message I got. ;)

Thanks for looking!

  1. Ew ew ew! People actually put wigs on their cats? I have never heard of that. I would NEVER do that but even if I wanted to my kitty wouldn't let me.

I'm the same as you - I let my animals be animals.

  2. What kills me is when people pick up or carry their pets...I want to scream.."they're pets!..they have 4 legs..let them use them"..Geeze!

  3. Kind of scary looking to me. I mean sure it can be cute to others. But the most I would ever do is put a sweater on my dog when it's cold...

  4. That is NOT nail polish. Those kitties are wearing Soft Paws, which happens to be a pretty awesome product - vinyl nail caps that keep kitty's claws from scratching furniture, other cats, and their humans. They're a humane alternative to declawing. They come in lots of colors, and in clear.

I don't personally use them on my cats, because I long ago resigned myself that owning cats = having no piece of furniture that is not scratched. But the animal shelter at which I volunteer highly recommends them to cat owners who are concerned about scratching, and I've helped many owners put them on their kitties.

  5. LOL! That cat looks scary! I don't like wigs on cats but hats are funny... I also don't like beauty pageants, but I LOVE watching Toddlers & Tiaras because those people are so amusing. And weird.

  6. Whitney said it best. I use soft paws... not because of the cool colors they come in (which is just a bonus) but because my cat has this tick where she vigorously scratches her neck in the same spot every time she grooms herself. Soft Paws make it so she doesn't make herself bleed because she has no undercoat (she's a Turkish Van <3). It's also great to not have to declaw your cat and have nice furniture at the same time.

  7. Arghhh...........not on my cats......I think it's ridiculous. People are going to let animals look like humans. Not my thing though. I've got two cats and they are cats....my dearest ones but they are cats......I love them till death.....but I would never dress them up!
The caps for the kitty's nails could be a good thing for people who are afraid of theire furniture.
II have a leather couch and etc......they scratched them.....It's their nature.
I have all over the place cattrees for them but one of my lovelys always takes something else. Although I taught them from their birth to use a cattree. I guess she is laughing at me and whem I'm gone she goes for furniture or wallpare....that's her favorite I guess.
Well what can I do. They are who they are and I love them.
A long time ago I had a friend who had two cats.....after a while I noticed something strange about them.....
What do you think!!!! They didn't had any nails on their forelegs!!!
Also because they had make a scratch at his leather couch.
Argghhhhh I can't stand this!!! If it is for medical reasons....well that's a different story but just for your couch ............. NOOOOOOOOway.

  9. Wigs and stuff on animals look stupid, and probably hurt them.
The 'soft claws' on the site you linked aren't too bad, but shouldn't be glued on. *sigh*
My hubby used to put the rubber claw tips on his cat (minus the glue) and they would stay on ok. He put them on because he was a beast with them. (duh, he is an animal) but he would shread a couch in a day, and cut the hell out of his skill. Trimming never lasted long so the caps helped for a while, but eventually he learned to take them off.

  10. I have to agree with whitney. I have used the clear ones on my cats a couple times when we were having clawing/scratching issues. I would much rather people put soft vinyl caps on their kitties than declaw them, which I think should be outlawed. I used them after my cats had surgeries, to keep them from injuring the surgical sites. Now, using them just because you want your cat to have pink nails.... that is a WHOLE other story....

  13. That's horrible! animals are just that, why can't we just leave in peace?? If I put a wig like this to my dog, I'm sure he would eat it!

  14. Looks like it. :/

  15. =))) I'd pick up my chihuahua if I was walking in a crowd. Don't want anyone to step on it..

  16. Thanks for clearing that, Whitney. But I wasn't talking about nail caps...some people DO use nail polish on their cats and I'm sure they don't use it for protection. =)
I don't know much about nail caps though. I'd probably use them on my cats if it was REALLY, really neccessary. I don't mind scratched furniture so much.

  17. =) I never watched it. To me it's like torturing and child molesting, but what do I know.

    ReplyDelete
  18. OK, I get it when it comes to using nail caps, but what about nail polish on cats? People DO that.
BTW: Does your kitty likes water? I mean...can she swim?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I can see you really love your cats, by the way you talk about them. =) I won't even comment the thing your former friend did to his/her cats.

    ReplyDelete
  20. =) Glad you agree.

  21. As I already said - I don't know much about Soft Paws or whatever they're called... But nail polish? Come on...
When it comes to protecting your animal, then it's neccessary. Like dogs get those collars after surgery...that needs to be there for a reason.

  22. Now I'm already sorry about posting that darn link and everybody is talking about those soft claw thingies. =)
I meant nail polish... What do you think about THAT?

  24. If I put a wig on my chihuahua, he'd eat ME, not the wig. =))

  25. Holly crap, this is sick!
When I saw this photo of the cat with a wig, I almost fell of the chair. This cat looks like mine... Poor baby...

  26. Yeah I'm not too fond of the nail polish thing on animals. I'd be worried about them chewing it off their nails and swallowing it.

  27. This is seven shades of WRONG! My cat passed away last year, but if I had ever attempted to paint her claws she would have kicked my a$$. Don't even get me started on the stupid wigs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ...oops I meant "a$$",not "a$".

  29. I haven't read the other comments, but just wanted to throw around my opinions too. ;P I think doing beauty stuff to pets, and especially cats, is sick. It seems this is predominantly something Americans do, even though I know most Americans are sane people with healthy values, there still seems to be a market for pet beauty enhancement in that twisted, superficial country. The sickest thing of all is the declawing surgery available for pets and their owners, obsessed with having over-neat homes. If you do not want claw marks on your floors and furniture, don't get a pet!!! They are not toys, they are alive beings, and the claws exist for a reason, actually, more than one reason. Luckily, these procedures are not available in Sweden, nor in other European countries, I believe. From an ethical standpoint, declawing surgery is absolutely prepostorous.

And I do feel almost the same wy about the little vinyl covers you can glue onto your cat's claws. hey need their claws. They need them not only for climbing and hunting, but also for social reasons. To reduce their functionality is to amputate the animal, in a way.

Like you write, I don't feel the same way about dogs, as they do not use their claws in the same way cats do, and also don't retract them that much. It's just a general sick, vain thing to do, dressing up your dog for other reasons than comfort (in cold, rain etc). The Paris Hilton way: using your dog as a beauty accessory- I despise it.

    There, my 99 cents. xD

Sorry, feel strongly for this subject :D

  30. Now that looks freaky looking! Brooke made my accept dogs wearing clothes. I think they're cute but I doubt I'd do it to my dog. I think a coat is a good idea and also some boots when it's snowing. When I used to let my dogs out for a little pee run my one baby used to come in and collapse on the floor with his legs outstetched. His paws were caked in ice. Of course it only happened when it snowed but he could've used boots. The first time that happened I burst out laughing and wondered why he was spread out like that. Then I took a look at his paws. Poor little angel. He looked like a little lamb romping through the snow. He loved jumping around in it. I really miss him, he's been long gone. I also had many cats over the years and love them. Wish I could have animals.

  31. I think people who do this should be summarily executed. Declawing is disgusting and while capping their claws for their personal safety is great (helping them to stop hurting themselves when they just can't help it), otherwise the person who said "Don't get a pet!!" is spot on.

I've had several dogs and cats and they are not my personal playthings to play dress up with. You can get dolls for that. They are individuals who I love and look after and am privileged to share my life with. I have no wish to abuse their dignity by *shudders* putting nail polish, wigs, or costumes on them.

  32. ohhh a BIG NO!! I don't have cats but i have 5 dogs.. people should treat animals like human not DRESS LIKE HUMAN..

  33. Feline, I agree with exactly what you said about America and I live there. People's vanity makes me sick sometimes. I think nail polish on animals is ridiculous.

  34. If someone tried putting on nailpolish on my cat, would strangle whoever it was!
I have four cats, anyone with four cats understand they can't have expensive designer leather furniture, and expect them to stay perfect.
Declawing is forbidden in Norway, and I think it's just right it is.
