Essence - Underwater VS Underwater

Essence does this a lot lately. They make a nail polish shade, name it and sell it for a while and then they make a new shade, but sell it with the same name as previous shade. Remember my Spicy nail polish?

My BF bought me the older version of Underwater and I just got the new version yesterday. They're both blue, but they're nothing alike.

Version 1 is a shimmery frost and Version 2 is a creme with blue specks in it. Color drops on duty:

Here's how they look on the nail - I used 2 coats of Underwater V2 and three coats of V1.

If you can't decide which one you like better, or you happen to have both of them, you can just layer them...
This is two coats of Underwater V1 over one coat of V2.

Dear Essence: I like the new version, but please, stop doing this. There are two ways to take care of this matter:
a) quality control
b) give new names to new shades (that's not too hard, is it?)

Which one do you like better?

Thanks for looking!

  1. What strange that Essence does this.. but oke.. I own Underwater version 1, but I think I like version 2 better...

  2. I agree that it's annoying (especially if you request other people to pick up the colour for you!).. I love v2, though :) Very deep and underwater-y. Great post btw!

  3. Maybe they don't have enough funds to make too many names registrations, so they economize :D

  4. Version 2 is stunning, I think every brand has a colour practically the same as Version 1! Giving a new polish the same name as an old one seems a bit crazy.

  5. They did it also with Go Wild!! I prefer V2 and...If they have this sort of Quality Control issues, it's really bad!

  6. Joooj kolikokrat se je to meni zgodilo! Tako imam že par "dvojnikov" doma. In potem poskusi nekomu razložit kaj imaš na nohtih ....

  7. oh, v2 is wayyyy better. to me it much more reminiscent of actual under water.

  8. I like v2. Gah! I don't think they realize how difficult double-naming can be for bloggers when we tell people about a shade, etc. They won't know which one unless we show a picture.

  9. Hmmm, I think I like version 2 better.

  10. I like them both, but I like V2 better. Sinful Colors does that a lot, too. Seriously...how hard is it to come up with different names?!

  11. I have the first one and I seriously dislike the formula. It's wayy too sheer to my taste. I hope the second one is better in that way. The shade itself it gorgeous!!

  12. weird that they would name both with the same name!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That would be very confusing, especially if someone is wanting to get it as a present

  14. ja imam dvije verzije nijanse 19 rock and roll :) a ovdje mi se druga verzija vise svidja :)

  15. Hm, I'm not sure which I like better...

  16. I like the 2nd version better.

It seems like they re-formulate the polish completely and just use the same name, so strange...

  17. I really like your nails at this length, by the way. They look really great!

  18. Okay, that came out wrong, haha. They ALWAYS look really great, I just especially like them today. :-)

  19. mnogo bolja ova druga verzija, a sto se neprofesionalnosti tice mislim da su oni takva kompanija koja se obzirom na cene ne zamara preterano takvim 'detaljima' kao sto su nazivi, nijanse.... za ocekivati.

  20. Maybe they get feedback and try to make the formula better

  21. Oh I love both those shades and also the layered effect. I wish Essence was available in the UK!

  22. I don't even know what's worse, naming different polishes the same or giving it just a number. :D
The fun fact is that the numbers are the same too! That's insane of them :D
Love the second version much much more, the finish is much more interesting and the polish is unique. As someone already said here before me – tons of companies have dupes\look-a-likes of the first version.

  23. I like V2 more!
I've noticed that essence does this with a few other colours,too...
    it's annoying

  24. ohh ohh.. didnt they notice that they gave the same name?? i like the v2 most..

  25. version 2 is wayy better imo. its not frost.

  26. That really stinks. I hate when any company does that. They don't even look remotely the same. I prefer the new version. The first is too frosty looking.

  27. I like them both in their own way. Why couldn't they name them differently?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like both of them!
I have the frosty version, must find the dark sassy one!

  29. I don't get why they do this! I think it's such a shame about Spicy, I really liked the old (shimmery) version and now it's a little bit boring. (I do like the new one though, I bought it today actually haha. But I love the old one much more)

  30. That this strange habit of giving companies the same name with different colors. Here I have seen take a color from the market and then restate the market with different name.
I preferred the V1 because I won in a swap with Portugal and adore this shade of shimmering blue, reminds me of happy days and full of hope.
    Kisses

  31. I noticed this with Essence too, it's so annoying! :-/ They did it with Go Wild too, mine is a dusty pink creme and the other version is blueish. I have Underwater V1, I like v2 more since it's not a frost/pearl. But it looks great mattified. ;)

  32. I like them both. They just need different names. This reminds me of MPJ. I need the new version. :P
