The Machines Aren't Out to Get You

So... I'm browsing through my Google Reader, clicking on the posts. I see something interesting and I want to comment... scrolling down to the 'post comment' section. I type in whatever nonsense I have to say and click the submit button. Yay! I have spoken. My words are gonna be read... Wait, what? Noooooooooooooo! Please, don't make me type in the verification words! I'll do anything. I'll be good, I swear.
I hang my head. *sigh* I silenty type in the word that makes no sense (in those rare times, when it actually does make sense, it usually insults me) and click on the post comment button. I'm not that excited to share my opinion anymore...

FACT #1: It's a scary world and I'm not saying that Terminator isn't real but the machines aren't out there to get you. At least not all of you. They're too busy planning the world domination (along with LOL cats).
FACT #2: Word verification is useless. I never got spammed by a computer. When I think of it, I only got spammed once or twice (by a person), which proves my point or it just means that my blog isn't that popular. XD I have a bad feeling this is gonna backfire...
FACT #3: Word verification is time consuming for the commenters. Be kind to them, they're your readers.
FACT #4: I comment less because of the word verification.

I hope you can read this with a bit of humor. But really, I sincerely dislike this system. If you want to make sure that all the comments are OK and posted by humans, read them before they're published. I prefer seeing ''comment waiting for approval'' than WV box. And that way, you'll certainly read all the comments, even those on old posts.

Join me! Say no to the word verification.

Let me know what you think about this system and thanks for looking!

  2. meh reasons* :P I do hate you cant edit a comment anywhere :(

  3. You have a point actually, stupid cause I use it on my site aswell, although, just like you said, I comment less when others have it too,..kinda stupid right? Time for a change, thnx!

  4. This is the main reason I took it off my blog. If it frustrates me then it must frustrate others who read as well.

  5. I absolutely hate the word verification thing too and it's usually the reason why I stop writing a comment on someone else's blog. It's super annoying and I really dislike it. I don't even have the approval thing on because right now it's unnecessary. I do get spammed quite often but I've banned the commenter and the comment get automaticly deleted so that's not a big deal.

The thing I hate the most is when you write a comment and push "post comment" and after that the word verification pops in. It's so nice to know that someone feels the same about this

  6. Word verification makes me less excited about publishing comments too, this is one of the reasons I don't use it on my blog =)

  7. I hate it to that's why I removed it on mine blog.

  8. I hate the verification. It's just annoying and another way to waste time.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I turned mine off too...I've been meaning to, because yeah, it's annoying. And I already moderate all comments, so it doesn't make sense.
    Thanks for this post!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Amen, preach it! I removed my word verification months ago because I don't like it myself on other blogs.
Don't do to others what you don't want done to yourself.

  12. I totally agree! I'd much rather wait to see comments then have to put in a word verification. I think I've been spammed once and it wasn't by a computer! Here, here! Down with the word verification!

  13. Oh I HATE word verifications! Sometimes I forget to check for them after the page reloads. By the time I remember, I'm already on another blog and my message has been lost...

  14. Yes, I'll let you know... Which also answers your last comment on my blog. :) Trust me, I wouldn't use wv if it wasn't for a very good reason. I am one of the people who HAVE been spammed by a bot. Deleting 200+ comments in chinese just wasn't all that fucking delightful. Had I used moderation instead, well, then I'd have to go through those fucking gazillion comments that way instead. So I say thanks, but no thanks, effortless bot spamming is nothing I want to be confronted with again. Ever.

  15. Jaz tudi sovražim ta sistem in včasih samo zaradi tega ne komentiram :/ Jaz imam način ''comment waiting for approval'' in je ok :) Edino včasih me spammerji ubijejo, ko se zjutraj zbudim in imam 100-300 komentarjev za pregledat in od tega je ponavadi 99% spama :O Grrrrr :P

  16. I totally agree with you. I detest it. It's very time consuming. When you read many blogs and comment having to type in those damn letters are a big pain. I've also had many of them that I couldn't read and had to repeat the typing a few times. Bless you for not having it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Feline: Guess you're one of the few. I've never had that kind of problem, but I can understand.

@Lyra: Na srečo se to meni še ni zgodilo. *potrkam po lesu*

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have problems with that word verification too
i keep putting the letter i see they are corret but the machine keep saying is not....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe it's less of a problem with certain types of blogs than others? I run a kimono blog and before I installed word verification I was dealing with between 50 and 200 spam comments PER DAY. I had them all added into a queue, but that was still a whole lot of deleting and removing I had to do every single day, for a blog that hardly ever gets any *legitimate* comments.

I wish it wasn't necessary, and if anyone has any better suggestions I'd love to hear them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hate it too =) I use no control mechanism over my commenting system!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree! I got tired of WV on the blogs I read, so I decided to change my comment system away from it. I figured if I didn't like it, why subject my readers to it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Maestra: Se strinjam z vsem napisanim, ampak očitno imajo nekateri res težave s spamom...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yah having the type the captcha can get irritating. I mean worst case scenario you get a few spam comments, easy to delete :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. You know what...you're right. I'm taking word verification off my blog now - I'm way too small to get spammed by computers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I never had that and you only commented once. Guess i'm not very popular, muahahah!
I think its annoying to put out those verification words. Nothing happens you guys!
    kiss

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't have a problem with it...if it asks for word verification up front, not after I've typed in my comment and entered my ID.

My blog gives people a choice: log in, and don't see the captcha; or don't log in, and enter the captcha on the same screen where they type in the comment, their name, their email, et cetera. Then hit "Submit" one time.

When I didn't have the captcha requirement for non-logged-in users, I would get lots of spam-comments. I still get those even now; but I get a lot fewer of them (and I also moderate my comments.)

  28. I fucking hate WV with a hot burning passion. I can see needing it in Feline's case and some other times, but most of the time it's just pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The only WV program I like is reCAPTCHA because it is using our answers to help digitize old and low quality texts. I only recently discovered it was used for this and I think it is a clever way to get millions of computer users around the world to puzzle out transcriptions. (then again, I'm a BIG dork)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just took off the word verification setting for my blog! Thanks for this post! I totally see how it is a waste of time and discourages comments :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have mine disabled because it annoys me when I encounter it as a commenter as well! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I hate it too. However, then someone can go to fiverr.com and pay just $5 to go out and make 100's of comments or spams for anyone, it's only a matter of time. Having said that, maybe I'll drop WV til I get an issue. Fair enough? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I also think it's frustrating! Sometimes I type something, hit "post comment" and move on. Three hours later I switch back to the tab and I realize that I still have a word verification thingy to fill. By then, of course, it's already expired so it has to reload. It's a mess.

I think it's fine to have the verification for anonymous comments but not to us, bloggers :( Plus, I think 95% of all spam I have ever received was from bloggers passing on their blog addresses.... Only ONE from an apparent machine. Conclusion: word verification will not protect you from those 95%.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I removed WV from my Blog long ago.
I believe that whatever I like, everyone likes, and what I don't like, others don't like either.

I usually don't have time for commenting, however, there have been special times when I was moved to leave one. If I had to go through WV to do so, I make a point not to comment again. I just don't have the time for it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I never like it either.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if my blog does the verification or not. LOL I think it's on it's original setting. lol

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah, I don't like verification, it's too time consuming. I'll still comment though, but I wish some bloggers would get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm so glad you wrote about this. I thought I took word verification off my blog *months* ago. I must not have saved the edit to my comments page! When I respond to comments, I am logged in and never had to go through typing the letters. Thanks so much for bringing this up! <3

    ReplyDelete
  38. i agree. i say no too!!

the worst part is I type a comment and submit it. then close my window immediately after submitting only to realized my comment wasn't posted. argh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. oo. that comment was me under the name li lian i was in the wrong account

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hahaha I love it!! Sometimes I think I have sent my comment and close the page not filing out the verification.
Terminator was an awesome movie by the way :)

Me dobivamo dnevno res veliko tega, a nam ga k sreči dobro prefiltrira. Juhej!
Škoda za super komentiranje. :( Ja, vse dobre reči so plačljive. Žal. :(

    ReplyDelete
  42. My comments aren't moderated at all (my blog is too young), but sometimes Blogger restores the "published after approval" setting of comments, which I never enabled...
Machines have their own life and take decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Huh, očitno je to zelo moteča zadeva... Ne vem, jaz pač odtipkam tiste besede. Bom pa to "skensala" pri sebi :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. hell yeah! word verification sucks big time!

    lol@youstink :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. And that is why I disabled it on my blog. =)
It makes me spam vunderable, but at least visitors do not get annoyed and leave as result of the verification.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The word verification is really something very unpleasant to the reader. Sometimes desist from commenting because of this system, would love to comment and click the send comment!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I hate those word verification things! I usually end up getting them wrong a million times and some times have to do the audio version for poor sighted people and I still get it wrong! The worst is when the captcha is below the submit button, so I don't see it, press submit and assume I've posted a comment, when infact I haven't. Totally lame and annoying on blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks for this post. You have a valid point. I can easily delete spam comments anyway and my blog isn't that big. I just removed my word verification option. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love love love comments, and I know other bloggers do to. So I try to leave a comment when ever the mood strikes me. But I wont ever struggle with the verifcation and think the hole system is silly. I would prefep to see Comment Waiting any day

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm not a fan of WV either though I can certainly understand the reasoning for some people. My pet peeve with it is when it's not shown on the page then you hit submit and it reloads the page with the captcha on it. They always seem to load slow, I don't want to wait 5 minutes for the "word" to show up just so I can finish posting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't have it, I just screen the comments.
My blog is a low traffic site, though, so that may be the reason people use it.

Sometimes I can't even figure out what I'm spelling and have to do it more than once, which is a pain.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I undid mine because it's so annoying when a really long word pops up and I need to type it in and I guess its annoying for anyone!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, it really is annoying but I guess I use it because I don't want to take a chance on being spammed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree! this system it's so annoying !!! >.<

    ReplyDelete
  56. Good point! I am running now to change my settings.
I don't get many comments, but maybe I will get a couple more ^_^.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thank you for this post! I frakking hate word verification! And I don't subject my readers to it. So far, I have never been spammed and don't really think I will be. If I am, I might change my tune, but for now, death to the word verification!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't like it either, but I understand why some blogs have to use it. I would also prefer comment approval instead, but with a very large blog the owner would spend half the day going through comments instead of posting to her blog. I wish spammers would just go away forever instead! lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. omg i never thought of it that way. i'm definitely taking mine off because a) i moderate comments anyway and b) I STILL GET SPAMMED! and c) i hate doing it on other sites as well :P
