Revisited: Silver Chrome Nail Polish

Special polishes deserve special posts. I'm not sure when this chrome nail polish rave began, but I think it was because of the Minx manicures we could see on celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. How to achieve that 'mirror' look without spending a fortune on Minx nails or using falsies? The answer is simple - chrome nail polish.

OK, so the result isn't exactly the same and mirror-like, but it comes pretty close. I purchased my first chrome nail polish on Ebay in the beggining of 2009. It was Stargazer in shade #232. Later I managed to get my hands on the Maybelline Mirror Image polish. I wrote a comparison post on Stargazer and Maybelline chrome polish, which happens to be the most popular post I wrote and is also a reason for the post you're reading right now. China Glaze (which was my favorite brand for a long time) didn't need much time to come up with their own Khrome collection for Fall/Winter 2009. FYI: I don't count their Romantiques collection as a chrome one.

Chrome nail polishes are awesome, but they're also a pain in the rear. Why, you ask?
*Chrome nail polish will emphasise every little ridge on your nails. You can use a ridge filling base underneath your chrome polish, but that takes us to the next 'pain in the ass' part:
*It's almost impossible to apply chrome nail polish over your regular base coat. You're gonna need some practice and a lot of patience. And to top it all:
*Chrome nail polish chips super easily.

If you're willing to go through the PITA moments, then I suggest you this chrome polish - China Glaze Millenium. It's practically the same as Stargazer and Maybelline one. I'm wearing both ChG and Stargazer chrome nail polish on all of these photos and there's no difference between them. I'd add a Maybelline one as well, but I don't have it anymore.

  1. I know chromes have a lot of PITA moments but I just love them :-). This CG one looks beautiful on you.

  2. I love that chrome look on the nails and I actually like it even more on my "ridgy" nails. At home I have two very old bottles of L'Oreal nail polish - I think they are called something like "metallics" and they were the first chrome nail polishes I ever had and I they still work great, even though they're probably older than 10 years.

  3. Meni ni bilo nikoli jasno, zakaj je 'Stargazer vs Maybelline' tvoj najbolj brani post. Odkrito rečeno, teli 'mirror' lakci meni delujejo samo plastično in no, preveč Lady Gaga-ish, pa še PITA so. I'll pass. :)

  4. I adoooooore Chrome nail polishes. I know you need perfect nails to pull them off, and I seldom have perfect nails, but still... I actually Khrome versions of all the Romantics I had just because I love the Khrome finish so much. As for the application problem, I found a miracle solution: you have to use the kind of base that's designed for holo polishes. I have Nfu Oh Aqua Base, and it works wonders on chrome polishes (and matte polishes as well). Honestly, ever since I found that trick, my only issue with CG Millenium is that it's so hard to find that I don't dare wearing it as often as I'd like :p

  5. For quite some time, I was in desperate need of ChG Millenium. But I can't find it anywhere... Not even on eBay :(

So now I'm using Stargazer Chrome for a couple of years, and I think it works fine (I use it mostly for stamping).

But ChG Millenium does look very good on you!

  8. I've been lemming Stargazer Chromes for a while, sooner or later I will buy them (maybe easier to get than CG). But my nails will definitely need a good ridge filler!

  9. Great post. The chrome looks awesome on you! I've always had a love-hate with chromes, but sometimes they're just the look I want. Also just nominated you for the Versatile Blogger award, which I have a feeling you've gotten before ... either way, linked to you in my last post!

  13. That's super pretty! And here I was, thinking that the 'Silver' polish by Gosh was already impressive... This one's even better and more reflecting :) Loving it!

  15. Izgleda res lepo, še posebej na takih lepih kratkih nohtih in v naslednjem letu si kupim kakšen chrome, le še za barvo se odločim ;)

  16. Love chrome polish. I don't want Minx for sure. Chrome polish is the next best thing. I always use 2 coats of Zoya Ridge Filler polish. I don't usually have a problem with them. Looks wonderful on you.

However I can not find it anywhere, HELP! :)
