Choice or Destiny?

I'm still pretty much useless... but I do have a question for you. I watched Mr. Nobody this week and it really got me thinking. Well, I've been thinking a lot about it even before the movie, but still.

Do you think the choices we make in our lives are really up to us or is it all just a part of a plan called destiny?

I believe everything happens for a reason and ever since I've had 'psychic' dreams (it happened twice in my life) I feel more and more like it's all 'written in the stars'. I admit that it comforts me to think that way. What do you think? Destiny or choice?

Oh yes, that's me. I get all philosophical every now and then. Then I think about it until my head starts to ache and that's when I go to more superficial things. Like nail polish and other pretty stuff. If you're one of those people too, here's a photo for you. So you can't say seeing this post was a total bust. =)

  1. I believe in a combination of both: destiny gives us the circumstances, but it's our choice how we react, what we make of them. Believing in destiny only seems too simple for me, if everything was destiny, I wouldn't be responsible for my actions, and I can't believe that.

  2. Funnily enough, this is something I've been thinking about lately, probably because I feel like I have absolutely no clue whatsoever what I'm doing with my life right now. I want there to be a destiny, a reason for everything that happens, I think. Maybe as a way for me to know that my choices, even the bad or rushed ones, are in the long term the right choices. Is that a way of dodging responsibility for these choices of mine? I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. I will own my choices, I just like the thought that they're happening for a reason that I'll learn eventually. Not right away, usually, but at some point.

I'm also a believer in the quote "Destiny is equal parts chance, free will, and necessity" (don't ask me where it's from, it's too embarrassing to admit), which sort of tells me that I can help along my own destiny to end up where I want to be. A sign to help me figure out where I want to be in life wouldn't be amiss, however... ;)

Whew, thank you for letting this lurker get that off her chest. :) I haven't been able to talk about these feelings lately with anyone, so it's a bit of a comfort to have an outlet for it. While I'm here, please let me say how much I enjoy your blog. I've been following it for a while and I think you have such a great style. And I always love seeing pictures of the cats. Which is how I'll be spending my night, curled up with my own kitten.

    Thank you again for sharing.

  3. Given how wishy-washy I am, the choices I make a rather sporadic. I definitely think I am forging my own path in this world.

  4. Up to us. Life is all about choices.

  5. I'ma supporter of determinism theory, so I believe that sometimes we can change something...But how to know if these changes aren't just a part of our destiny? Maybe if we make them we are even getting closer to what should happen and can't avoid it?
This is some sort of paradox and I can't think long about it without feeling like my head is about to blow up:)
So I looked at the photo and can't help but ask if you are going to write a post?) This water marble is gorgeous!!

  6. I have to say it's really a question I don't know what to answer.. I don't know it could be written, but no free will? Sad.. If written but changeable, wwhere's the point then? And if random, it's a little sad because it's not poetic.
    So I don't know ^^"

  7. I live with the principle: it's not destiny that makes our life, it's our life that creates destiny. Just sendpositive thought "into cosmos" and everything will be fine :-)

  8. Both! There are things unexplainable but also a lot of influence comes form the heart I think :).

  9. What if our choices are the destiny hmm.. Love the picture by the way:) x
