China Glaze Hologlam Disappointment

It's been a while since my last China Glaze nail lacquer purchase - I believe it was Glittering Garland. Not too long ago, I bought two most popular shades from the Hologlam collection: Galactic Gray and When Stars Collide. They were the ones I thought were worth owning.

I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in China Glaze nail polish as I was in these two. They were supposed to be amongst the favorites from the collection (by many bloggers), but I can't say I like them. Why? For two reasons: application and color. The formula of these two polishes was weird: goopy and hard to apply. The color is just... boring. It looks so mediocre in low light and when the sun hits it, there's just a little itsy bitsy hint of holographic effect. So underwhelming. I wanted to put them in the 'to get rid of' bin immeditaly, but I'm gonna give them a second chance. If they fail to gain my attention again, they're going away. Now I'm wondering: why are other people loving these two shades so much? Did I get a bad batch or are the other shades from the Hologlam collection even worse in comparison? I'm not sure, I only know I do not like them. Period.

Thanks for looking and commenting!

  1. You should try them over some kind of aqua base - that makes them apply quite easy (in comparison to typical holo goopy polish textures). I bought all Hologlam polishes and I like them, just because they aren't that "in ya face gonna smack you to death"-holo. :D But that might just be me...
Anyways, as I said - an aqua base really makes a difference with application, and the rest is totally up to your expectations you had when you bought them.

    1. Will do that... thanks for reminding me. But that won't change the fact I'm a bit disappointed in dull color.

  3. I love them both, in particular Galactic grey. I love the subtle, ultralinear holographic effect, compared to other more scattered, in-your-face holographics (Layla, I am looking at you!). On me, the application was flawless. With aquabase, is was a one-coater - a little runny, but not difficult to apply. Also, the green-toned grey looks good on my complexion.

  4. I can perfectly understand your disappointment concerning the hologlam polishes. I bought only one, but as you said, apllication was horrible, I wasn't even able to apply it at all and had to remove it again. The colour didn't convice me either :-( Really disappointing.

  5. I was excited when I heard about this collection too until I saw swatches. You could see they were well below average holographic wise. I bought the Color Club ones and they are nice.

    1. I agree. Compared to color club these just don't cut it. The holo barely comes through on these.

  6. The same story! I only bought Infra-Red. I made really great pictures - http://nailscope.blogspot.com/2013/05/infra-red-abelziedos-infra-red-in-apple.html - but I feel so bored with it. :/

But then I gave second chance to this polish - http://nailscope.blogspot.com/2013/05/otra-iespeja-second-chance.html
And I love how this polish looks like base color for some nail art. :)

    1. Yeah, well that's the problem with these Hologlam polishes: they actually look quite good on photos. But in real life - it was another thing. Your photos of Infra Red are really beautiful!

  7. I personally think the colors are fabulous :). As to application, my bottles were fine, really nice formula.. Maybe try a different base coat?

    1. I didn't use any BC with these. Will try again with my FNUG Aqua Fix. ;)

  8. I think you did a really great job with these polishes! I wouldn't ever have guessed that you had such problems with them by looking at the photos. The holo effect is meh but I still think they look great as a polish! =)

  9. I have been so thrilled with the Color Club holos that I don't even look at any other ones. They are awesome!

  10. Awww...sad to know that these nail colors are quite disappointing. They look great on pictures. Thanks for letting us know. I guess I have to skip on these too.

  11. You're right; the formula is iffy. I even used a good base for holos but I still had issues with application; lots of drag and bare spots. But I do like the colors of these; I like the smooth foil look but if its not your thing then there you go.

  12. Haha!! I'm actually glad to find out another person not as hype about it as me. When I saw the swatches online, I thought: "Yay! Finally something I'd be able to see in person" (well, since we have CG here...) anyway, when I saw the swatches in store.. goshh I thought they were so dull and boring and flat. The salesgirl was trying to get me hype about the new Hologlam collection and I asked her 'Don't you think it's so dull? *pulling the bohemian collection swatches* Don't you think these looks more interesting than Hologlams?' Then she nodded in agreement and I let out a disappointed sigh..

(I must have been one of their difficult customers.. hahaha!)

I think they probably should have infuse some larger bits of holographic particles. At least that would make it a little more interesting (in my humble opinion). I hope they pass your test though.. or you could use them to fraken, making them more interesting than they are :)

    1. I still have to try them over aqua base. Maybe that will make me change my mind. Although I doubt it.

  13. You're not on your own. I have When Stars Collide too and I thought the same thing. It only looks good in the sun. Otherwise the colour is pretty meh. I actually thought I'd been sent the wrong colour when I opened my box from Cherry Culture! No idea why these are so loved. Definitely better holos around, and from China Glaze too, I might add.

Baze sploh nisem uporabila. Naslednjič preizkusim še z aqua base, potem pa konec. =)

  15. Underwhelming is a good word for them, I feel the same. Having said that, they look really pretty on you!

  16. It feels so good that someone else finds the formula hard to apply. Everywhere I've red that those have good formula. Oh noes, not on my nails. I like the polishes, though, but I've not tried these two shades yet. I have ordered NfuOh Aqua Fix/base so next time I hope it will be easier to apply these.

  17. Everyone has talked so well about China Glaze so long so I decided to test. I regretted it instantly. Bad brand and quality for the price. :/

    1. China Glaze polishes are very nice. It was my favorite brand actually. But these Hologlam polishes aren't that good.

  18. I agree about the colours - they aren't pretty or interesting. I like a good, strong holo, as well, otherwise it hardly shows up. Color Club are superb - they will take some beating. Can't stop looking at my nails when I wear one of those.

  19. I have all the Hologlams and I really love Galactic Grey and Infra Red. I haven't had any problems with formula and mine are really holo in the light! Sad for you that you don't love them :(

  20. I don't think you got duds; I was totally disappointed in mine too!

  21. I like just two of the whole collection... they are really a big disappointment :D

  22. Application indeed isn't easy - but I do think that last shade is a nice color and has good holo. We just have been getting used to WAM POW IN YOUR FACE holo's like the Color Club ones.

  23. I would have to agree. I am a huge fan of holos, but these were a disappointment. Color Club holo's, FNUG and even the Layla holo's were a 100times better. Very disappointed.

  24. Awww, this is sad. I actually liked the Hologlams more than I figured (after reading that the holo wasn't that strong). I like that they have a bit of a metallic finish so they don't look as dull in low lighting as say the OMGs. But the holo definitely isn't as strong. To me, it makes them look more 3D than rainbowy, and I like that. We've seen quite a lot in the realm of bright holos (Layla, Jade, Dance Legend), but only these and the OMGs have been so utterly smooth. I hope if you try with the aqua base that it at least helps with the application, but I don't think it'll make much difference with the color :o/
